How do you reapair scratches on your hard wood floors?

We have a couple of dogs and they have given our hard wood floors and beating. There are some deep scratches. How can you repair them? Is there filler or some thing we can use beside replacing the wood or covering it with a rug

The only way for such a task is sanding the floor, re-staining and re-varathaning... no easy way. I empathize with the dog issue, I have one as well and we are diligent with the nail trimming but I can still hear the nails hitting the floor... only a matter of time for my turn at the same game...
