Honduras' Capital - Safe for travelers?
Okay, here is the deal. I am an MSW student and have the opportunity to go to the capital in Honduras for 4 months and teach at a private school. I would be living with the school's owners in their house.
I am trying to figure out how the local culture is. I am not a fear-ridden girl but all my mom can think about is human trafficking. I know that corruption is around in the political sphere but I hear that socially it is very stable.
If anyone is from there, or been there for an extended period of time, can you give me a picture of what it is like? I am the kind of person that loves to be immersed in a new culture but I do not want to get myself in over my head either.
How is the crime, tourism, cultural things to do (as I will have a lot of free time to go exploring), etc.
first off, that sounds like an amazing experience!!!
I see where your mom is coming from, but there isn't a place where there is not crime.
You shouldn't let you, or your mom's fears stop you from experiencing life. As long as you're careful (stay with someone, don't go down allies, follow your instinct) you will be fine.
One thing to note is the traffic, Hondurans dont usually follow the whole "pedestrians have right of way" so just becareful
Don't wear any fine jewelry or really nice, new clothes, and carry your money in your pockets. If a purse is necessary, fine one that will go around your neck like mailbag style. There are muggers and stuff, but what place doesn't have crime?
But if you're looking for cultural networking and experience, don't let fear stop you. Just take precautions and make smart choices. You have someone who you are staying with, so you will not sleep alone, and someone will be waiting for you at the end of the day, plus you can call your mom everyday! use skype or something so she can SEE youre safe lol
