Fish Oil for Breastfeeding
The fatty acid which is found in breast milk that helps with a babies brain development, and offers many other benefits is called DHA, or docosahexaenoic acid. This Omega 3 acid has just recently been added to infant formulas, and before that, the only way for an infant to get this important nutrient was through his or her mother's milk. In fact, the only way adult humans can get DHA is by eating foods containing it, or by buying supplements which include DHA in their ingredients. Although it has been proven that growth milestones are reached quicker by those kids who were breastfed, and that the risks of some birth defects are greatly diminished by breastfeeding mothers, not many people know that you can actually increase the amount of DHA that your baby ingests by changing what you eat, or take in.
A study was done at Harvard Medical School involving 25,000 children who's mothers had been in the Danish National Birth Cohort which was done on women who were expecting children between 1997 and 2002. They kept track of how much fish each woman ate daily, how long the mothers breastfed their children, and when each child reached important developmental milestones. The results were pretty astounding. The children who's mothers had ingested the most fish oils, and breastfed for longer, were far more advanced developmentally than those who did not. These women ate about three to four servings a week of cod, salmon, herring, plaice and mackerel.
The reasons for this are actually quite simple. The brain is hugely made up of fat cells, about sixty percent actually. Omega 3 fatty acids such as DHA make up a large part of those cells. What kinda of fats and how much of each one there is, plays an important part in how well the brain cells function and communicate. If a person does not have enough Omega 3 fatty acids in their brain, the metabolism of the brain will be altered.
The more tests which are done on fish oils and the role they play in overall health and brain functioning, the more is being discovered. For example, there have been several mental and emotional disorders such as depression, Parkinson's disease, dementia, Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia that have been determined to be more prevalent in those people who did not ingest fish oils and had low Omega 3 levels.
Yet another discovery made in the studies pertaining to fish oils and it's effects on breastfeeding mothers, it was also found that the babies whose mothers ate diets rich in fish oils spent a lot more time in resting sleep, and a lot less time in fitful active sleep. This was thought to be because the nervous system was more functioning and mature in those babies who had ingested more fish oils. So for all of you breastfeeding moms out there who are getting no sleep due to the baby not resting well, this should be taken into account. Perhaps you should eat more fish oil.
As a side note: it is also very beneficial to consume fish oils during pregnancy as this can also help with the baby's brain development. It is also a good way to avoid getting postpartum depression since much as with other conditions, women who have postpartum depression have lower levels of the fatty acids found in fish oils in their system. Since the baby is drawing as much of the nutrients in fish oils from it's mother, the mother should be sure and consume more.
It is suggested that you get the fish oil in supplements. This is because there is an increased risk of toxins like mercury present in fresh fish, so to be safe, you should choose a high quality fish oil supplement.

Can you "polish" wood furniture that is finished with Danish oil.?
I make furniture and have polished oil-finished pieces before and I want some outside opinions. I want to build up a shiny finish that looks "wet" without using laquer, frenck polish, etc. Is there a way to do this???
If a piece is already oil finished , you could build somewhat of a shine , but not a high wet looking finish without going to lacquers etc.
There are some oil finishes that can be built up to something of a gloss.
A few ways to go......
Minwax Tung Oil finish is pretty good.
Highly refined oils( Damn near varnish) are used to build up finishes on gunstocks.
Marine varnishes can give a high shine.
Hinckleys is pricey but good stuff. Even hardware store spar varnishes like Mc Kloskeys can give a good shine.
Oil based marine finishes can be applied to previously oil finished wood after a basic cleaning w' a solvent.
A natural finish guy & thats my best shot.
Best regards
