What is a good way to give new life to a worn coffee table?
I have a coffee table that is about 15 years old. I could get a new one, but I thought I might try and refinish it or paint it, or do something to it. I live in an apartment and don't have a lot of space or room for toxic fumes. How can I give new life to this coffee table. Any suggestions welcomed?
Remove any hardware that would need to be updated, putty any holes.
Use A crackle finish: The home improvement centers will have color swatches and examples for you to get ideas. Paint your table one color, apply crackle medium. Wait for the crackle medium to dry. Apply second color in straight, even strokes without going over them repeatedly, as this messes up the crackle process. Sit back, and wait for the magic!!
Paint legs and base, decoupage a poster, some cool wrapping paper, a bunch of post cards to the top. There is a product called "Mod Podge" which is a milky glue that dries clear. Also neat to try that looks like leather is to tear up pieces of a brown paper bag and slightly overlap them on the table, put a clear coat or two over the whole thing. You can also have a piece of 1/4" glass cut, edges polished, to fit the top of the coffee table to cover your decoupage.
I think tiling the top would be beautiful, however this would be more of an investment, as you need to purchase tile, mastic (Glue) grout, and then some type of edging to finish it off.
A Faux Finish is another great option. It is a fairly economical one, also. You can make your own wood graining tool out of a shower squeegee, by cutting little notches across the edge. Do a search on the internet for some faux painting techniques or look at some books at the book store to get some ideas on colors to use to create the look you want.Paint a base color, let dry. next, apply the glazed mixed with your chosen paint color, then pull squeegee straight across, wipe your squeegee and repeat. Put several coats of a non-yellowing poly finish on the top, or put a cut piece of glass over.
