Improving my woodworking and other DIY skills so I can make money using them, how to improve?
I don't have any real skills but want to improve my carpentry, painting, plastering etc As I am now mid thirties and wanting to change directions, i was thinking of using my Gran's huge house and garage, she lets me do whatever i like and though her place would be a good place to practice. I guess in her garage (which she never goes in I could practice woodwork good enough for basic jobs in people's houses. What kinds of things should I practice doing? What kind of painting should I practice? Also my cousin said instead of going on a course for plastering or brickwork, go and work for free with someone for a week and copy how they do it, is this right? If so, how would i approach these people and ask? I emailed plumbers for this and got no replies.
You can go to trade schools to learn trades like plumbing or electrical work. To learn carpentry skills, you can take woodworking classes at local junior colleges. Or, you can look for work as a handyman or carpenter's assistant (entry level position where you do most of the tedious grunt work).
Another option would be to try to get a job at a home improvement store, and hang out with the people who work in the department that supplies the materials for the skills you want to learn. They can give you all kinds of advice on how things are done and you can do similar projects at home. You can also sit in on the do-it-yourself demonstrations they put on for the customers, and maybe even assist with the demos.
