Getting a Handle on Walking Canes
Walking canes come in a dizzying array of styles and colors. So many in fact that it gets pretty confusing when you try to find out which one is right for you. The cane itself is pretty standard, usually straight and cylindrical. Most commonly these days made of aluminum. The base can be a single point preferably with a rubber tip for traction or the base can have multiple tips for extra stability. The multi tip version is most commonly referred to as a quad cane.
The place where it gets a bit confusing is the handles. There are so many styles to choose from, it can seem a little overwhelming. In truth however it’s really pretty simple. There are 3 basic styles of handles: the classic hook, the derby, and the popular offset style. While there are other styles, these are the most popular and cover a wide verity of needs.
The Hook style is classic and is often used on wooden canes. It provides an ideal and versatile grip but is not ergonomic and lacks the added support that the other grip styles provide.
The Derby grip is ergonomic and provides a strong and stable connection between user and cane. With this grip the cane is less likely to be dropped and also offers a great deal of control.
The Offset handle is designed to provide proper balance and an ergonomic gripping position. It enhances the benefits of the hook style and in addition, it offers a better gripping service.

Do you know where I can find a walking cane decorated with Betty Boop?
I have Multiple Sclerosis and it's getting more difficult to get around and eventually will need a cane. I don't like the one I have. I would like one decorated with Betty Boop. Any suggestions?
Thanks
i'm sorry i don't know, but, i would go to an wood crafter and ask them to make you a cane. check out the local artisans - if they don't do it, they will be able to guide you to someone who could.
failing that, you could check the phone book for a tole-painting class and attend or ask the teacher if she would paint your cane.
all our accessories should be what we want!
good luck and happy new year!
p.s.
i am a huge betty boop fan myself! so cute!
