Need some carving tips to make a Star(I've never carved before)?

So I decided to try and carve my girlfriend something from this anime she's been watching (its the star in the link below). I bought a block of 3/4 x 7 x 10 basswood and i plan to saw it off to a 7x7 to create the star. I've never done any carving before so I was wondering how I should go about doing this? I only have a pocket knife and an x-acto knife with me but I might be able to find some more tools around here (live on a college campus). Thanks for your help!
